Obviously I mainly talking about Goonch but I suppose the question could apply to others.

The more I read about the temperature for Goonch I get the feeling not many people get there's to a large size. So the agree temp is 22-24°c there about. They really don't like it hot, on a couple of days his tank has gone up higher he visually look stressed. I put this little tollarance down to the fact in the wild they would stay in the shallows ( to avoid larger fish) and the temp would very day to day. So if we say the temp is around 22°c is this the coldest it get to in the natural environment? Is that shallows water or is this the expect temp an adult would need in the deeper parts of the river because you would expect it to be colder (and apart from seasonal change would for the most part be more stable) in then parts so is it safe to say they could take 20'c or lower??

On a side note is the reason allot of people can't get these cats up to large sizes because of temp? If young fish can take difference's is it safe to assume adults are less so and that to higher temp can cause heath issue??

I understand the oxygen in water is basically governed by temperature also but just trying to understand this. I can't find any real info on water temp in the natural environment except the given values on caresheets.

Just basically thinking out loud lol

Probably could benefit from the magic word "goonch" in the title :)

There exist maps of water temps for all water bodies around the world measured at surface but I also recall people citing water temps as a function of depth for water bodies that were found on the web.

So the info is out there. One has to play a google scholar for awhile :)

Just make sure you know your species and its natural range, of course.

i figure it might get more attention if it wasn't just goonch related as i would have thought it would be the same for wels etc. the biggest issues not knowing the collection point, and this is going to make the biggest difference i think.

googling the general areas is pointless because it covers a few countries with mainly different river sources and feeds.

the kali river for example has an average air temp of 27'c average water temp is 25'c (higher than most site recommend) but at what level?? if we talking about a 10ft deep river where a fish spends most of its life on the bottom surely the temp lower will be what we need?? i maybe making this more complicated than it needs to be. this is also not taking into account extreme cold and hots. my thinking is as the goonch grow it would move into deeper thus colder water (in turn holding more oxygen) but how cold? is this the key to keeping these fish to large sizes??

think i'm going to keep it at 20-22'c and then drop it to mid teens as it grows

I'd look for the scientific articles on your goonch species then. I'd expect they should describe fish biology and how it changes with age and size and describe the habitats, including temperature.

The temp you found is surface, I'd guess. Need to know what average means. Averaged over what?

But I think there must be temp versus depth for various portions of Kali on the net.

Mid teens in Celsius sounds extreme yet it is but a feeling because of my ignorance of goonches ID and biology.
