Hi! I have had discus for a while and every week I go to my lfs to get my water test but I do not have that much time too keep going to my lfs to get the water tested and I am going to buy a test kit, but I found out thatthere are strips and chemical kit. Which is better?
I find colours on liquid based test kit much easier to compare with the chart than with strips.
The colour difference on the chart are so closed I cant even tell which is it.
But if you are really a fish-fanatic, go get an ion selective electrode.
Those are pricey but they give very accurate reading and its in a digit as well.
A chemical kit is definitely better than strips. I only recommend strips if you're doing quick tests on multiple tanks at once and need a general idea of how the water quality is. The chemical kit provides more specific numbers.
Just to inject some more discussion fodder; not all liquid testers are created equal. This is more important I find in the marine side of the hobby, but it still matters. The Salifert test kits for example are very high quality, some of them are 40-50 bucks.
Personally, I use strips at as I'm lazy and have multiple tanks, and usually no water issues.
As a fish keeper with 8 tanks right now and that number will be tripling in a year I plan to stick with strips. Can't afford the time for chemical tests.
kk I will go with the chemicals then! I am a fish fanatic but I will not go to those really really fancy machines for just a chemical test. Thanks guys
