How do you test if you have hard or soft water? I bought a pretty expensive test kit, and there is nothing to test if the water is Hard or soft. Also do you think Hard or Soft water could be a big affect on cichlids?

there are test kits for hard and soft water, its called tds total dissolved solids, get a tds meter. also carbonate hardness it tells how much buffering the water will take. also are you keeping african or south american cichlids?> big dif in water requirments
South American/Central. My standard water parameters are fine, but I have never really heard of the hard vs soft water topic
There is definitely a kit to test for hard and soft water. Also that is not a big issue for many CA/SA cichlids.
