I have always used the liquid/dropper bottle type of of testing for water parameters but am wondering if there is an alternative/better option (digital meters etc).?

Welcome to the forum!
I actually had the exact same question a while ago. The gist of it is that for freshwater tanks, the degree of accuracy needed doesn’t require anything beyond the simple liquid test kits. If you get into reefkeeping, digital meters and better tests become much more important for maintaining coral health.

Better is very subjective. Liquid tests are more than accurate enough, quick and most importantly cheap.
Next step up in price JBL has a kit with an app that scans test strips and compares colors etc. That's about $70 here.
Then you've got aquarium computers that will measure water stats and then can control dosers to correct them, starting in the $1000+ range.
