Water tests

What's the max my nitrate should be before I throw in the towel and do a water change ?

Current readings are.
0 ammonia.
In between 0 and 0.25 ppm of nitrite.
And in between 0 and 2.5 ppm of nitrate.

3 days since last water change. I figured the readings would be worse.

First off your nitrite should be at 0. Your nitrate being that low and having nitrite makes me seem like your tank is cycling.?. Is it a new setup? To your question, long term its good to keep your nitrites lower than 40ppm with under 20 being ideal.

Tank has been set up for 3 years..but some new stock has been added.

I just got the api master test kit the other day. I normally just do 50% water change every week. Figured since I increased the stock a decent amount I should start testing.

Nitrate shouldnt be that low ( in a perfect world it should be 0 but not the case) and nitrite should be 0. Your tank may have got overwhelmed with the additional stock. Keep doing large w/c s

That's what I figured. But at what parameters should I do the water change?

I am in the process of dry walling the basement. One room is designated for my plywood build. 8 x 4 x 30". As it stands now the grow out tank is pretty overstocked. Is it possible that the filters just can't keep up with that bio load? I have had the added stock for 2 weeks now.

1 bass the SRD and the Oscar are the only ones that are 10" plus so far. Rest are " grow outs "

Filtration is an ehiem 2028 and a fluval 404. They both feed a 5 gallon spray bar filled with bio balls. Each canister has mechanical filtration via corse and fine sponges. And then a single tray of sintered glass media.
