I have a 620 gal. Tank with a 180 gal sump. The sump has k-1 media in it. How many gal. Per hr do you think I need to have ?
Tank is freshwater heavy stock with bass ,rays and more.
I would like to hear from other big tank owners because I'm being told that big freshwater tanks only need 3x turnover.

Thanks Wlim that's what I thought also but the company I bought my sump from had originally told me that the filter system would have a 8x turnover but with the size of the returns and the canister filter and uv the system has so much head pressure that the pump is only running a 2.5 to 3 turnover.
The pump in running is a reeflow hammerhead but it's at around 20 ft of head.

Why is it at 20ft of head!?

Guessing it's down stairs...at this point you are thinking like a pond, some ponds aim for 2-3x pr hr. Most tanks aim for the 8-10x an hour. It really depends on stock. K1 can house quite the amount of BB.

I have a 300 gallon tank with 4x turnover rate with 2 canister filters and my 2700 gallon tank has a about 3x turnover rate using a pond filter.

Never had a problem with 3-4 times an hour turnover.

On my 1500 which was stocked pretty heavily I still only had at best 3x turnover with a standard sump design.

It's not always about the turnover rate, the filter is the key.

On my 2700 gallon tank I have a filter that is rated for a 6000 gallon tank and it's optimal flow rate is 6000GPH making that only 1x turnover on a 6000 gallon tank.

The tank is 3' the stand is 3 1/2' it has four returns. The pump t's off rite above it and drops to 3/4" flex hose one side goes threw a new clear filter then runs up under the yank and t's off again into two 3/4" returns and runs up to the top of the tank.
The second return from the pump is also 3/4" that goes threw a 120w uv then t's rite below the tank into two 3/4" returns that runs to the top of the tank.

On my 300 gallon i have 16.5x turn over minus 2 ft head. I got a really good deal on uber powerful pumps ($50), so don't ask why.. It works for me, tank is always spotless with my huge sump I made to handle the flow, no input on the low turn over rates...
