I plan to get a pair of water turtles. What species would you say are great for the start? I could get Emydura subglobosa, Diamond Turtles and so on. I don´t want the common ones that you can find in evry pond.

I started with a eastern painted turtle very easy 25 years ago. I now have a 125 gallon with 4 diamond back turtles. Love them recommend them not to hard to take care of. My painter is still in a 65 by himself doesn't like other turtles weird. I also have 5 Mississippi maps in a 1300 gallon pond. Easy too take care of also. Easiest way 2 turtles you need at least a 90 gallon. And a fx5 can't go wrong with a basking platform with a sunlight build and a basking bulb. Feed em pellets. Again just ask questions they'll get answered. Hope it helps. :)

If you mean diamond backed terrapins then yes they live in brackish areas in the wild but most that are captive bred are raised in freshwater.

I say depends on tank size. Muds and musk turtles generally stay small in the 5" range. Musk are better swimmers of the 2. So if you have a taller tank then go with them. But 2 musk can live in a 55 or 40 breeder as long as they are not aggressive to each other.

Mata-Mata is my favorite, but it's pretty specialized and grows pretty large, Ive never had one, let alone any turtle, but if I did it would be one haha.

i own two maps and have to say neither are aggressive plus i keep them with fish i prob shouldnt be keeping them with. i also have a stinkpot who is prob the funniest guy ive ever seen.
