i have been buying gallons from walmart.they have distilled ,spring and drinking water .whats the best for african cichlids? is there even a difference ? thanks for the info my good people.
Yeah, I wouldn't waste money buying water, especially for Africans. They'll want really hard, alkaline water (assuming they're not west Africans) and most water you buy will be super soft
They'll all be fine in tap water. If you have ammonia problems, then buy some prime. It will neutralize chlorine and chloramines, turn ammonia into ammonium (not so toxic) and help take care of any lingering nitrogen by-products.
If you're super paranoid you can get you have 2 options:
A specialized Carbon Block Filter that has been adapted for chloramines
Or any RO filter will do, but you will have to add minerals back into it.
If you can swing the $180 for the carbon block I would say that. You won't have to remineralize, plus it runs about about 60 g/hr instead of 1-2 g/hr that a RO unit would do.
Put you tap water in a tub before you put it in your tank. Treat the water with water conditioner and then put it in the tank. With Africans, it is not worth it to buy water. I have Ammonia in my water, but I just use conditioner and everything works great.
