Working on setting up my CL find $60 300gal rubbermaid tank outside. I am researching my filtration options and was wondering what everyone preferred as far as waterfalls or fountains go. I am more than likely going to go with a Laguna 900 because of the flow rate and it only using 65 watts. So with the waterfally basically the pump would send water into the waterfall box that will be filled with scrubbies or lava rock to act as the bio filter. With the fountain I will probably just stick it in a milk crate filled with scrubbies for the filtration. The waterfall will requre alot more work but in my head it looks much nicer and will be easier to maintain rather than having to drag the crate out to clean it I can just move a piece of flagstone or whatever is covering it and clean it out. Whats everyones opinion on the matter? The pond will be getting a lot of sun so should I go ahead and install a UV filter as well or just deal with that problem when it comes along?

No one? Had an extra plastic tote im going to try out as a waterfall box, used some extra aluminum sheet I had to make a little lip out of and siliconed it into the side. Pictures soon.

id go with a waterfall. Fountains just look tacky IMO. Plus waterfalls have a nice sound. haha

Certainly the way im leaning since I made the waterfall box with stuff I had laying around and won't have to buy anything else except filter material. Now I just have to hope it works, not too sure how well the aluminum is going to hold up glued to the plastic, might try and put some rivets through it as well or something to help secure it. Now I just have to get some fittings. Cut a big bread crate down so I can put some piping underneath it with the media ontop. Thinking about using some T's and 90's to make a rectangular shaped outlet pipe with holes to try and spread out the flow of water across more of the media.

Waterfall. Fountain will need to be shut down to view the fish since the water surface will be so aggitated.

Ditch the spray bar idea in the bottom of the filter, it will restrict flow. Just have it rip into the bottom, it will disperse throughout the media as it returns.

+1 for waterfall

i've got both and if i had to choose it would be a waterfall
I agree, the air I run through the bottom drain can make it look like a hot tub Time machine.. Waterfall=less disturbance.
