I know they have the "water resistant/proof" coating on them, but in the event of a mishap water can get anywhere. Is there anything that i can put a coat of on?
thanks!

Minwax Spar Urethane. You can get it in the paint dept. at home improvement stores like Lowes.

I wouldn't mess around with pressboard at all. For what it would cost you to properly seal it, you can build a proper hardwood stand that'll last 10 times longer. I tried sealing a pressboard 85 gal stand. 3 years later, it 'dipped' on one side. Luckily, I was in the hatchery just as it was starting to dip and was able to transfer the polys, drain the tank, and move the tank to a temporary cinderblock and 4x4 stand until I finished building a proper stand for it.

After reading your post you got me paranoid about what type of board my stand is made out of. The entire stand is painted with a very thick black paint. Is there a way to tell if I have pressed board or real hardwood board?

You can look in the back of the stand at the edges of the braces...you can see if the wood is solid...composit...or plywood. Like odd said...I wouldn't mess around with a particle board stand either HOWEVER if I had no choice. I'd go over every square inch of the stand with at least three coats of spray urathane OR a can of brush on spar varnish.
