This is my first post to this forum so first let me say nice to meet everyone even though I read this forum all the time.I was planning on a 180 and ended up with a 125. I have the following filters which I know are way overkill but I’m going to use them anyway. I am not closed to products like Purigen, Matrix, Etc. I have read many times you can never overfilter? I have this posted on the other forum I read allot also hoping to pull from all the experiance from both forums.

So here we are:

1.Fluval FX5
2.Fluval 406
3.Marineland C530

This is a tuff one I 've been trying to figure out, so I'm hoping you can help me with how I should setup the filter media in these filters. Also, what wattage heaters would you use.

Id run both fluvals, pack the 405 with bio media (ceramic rings/matrix) and use the fx5 as mechanical filtration to polish ur water.

Fx5 run all sponges and use prefilter media, use fluval bio max in each basket and in the 405 all bio media. Nothing else no carbon

For ur size tank 2 200watt heaters are suggested or u can run inline heaters on ur fx5 and save tank space. Either way u need 300-400 watts.

X2 well said...

If I were you I would follow that guide but I would add two 100ml bags of purigen in the FX5 as well 2nd or 3rd tray, either way should be fine.

Also, I'd recomend aqueon pro heaters, as stated before 2x 200w would be good.

What kind of stock are you planning for this tank? We can probably steer you better. Heavy stock and messy eaters may mean that you are underfiltered. I too like matrix for bio and purigen for chemical. What type of fish may dictate how much mechanical you need.

At this point I have been looking at some of the medium tolarger Malawi Haps. Already have some Red Empress, was thinking about a groupof six or seven synodotis Cats, maybe one or two unique Plecos, and I thinkthat will fill a 125 pretty fast. I have been reading on the Purigen and Matrixwas wondering how well does the Purigen recharge? It also talks about some dechlorinator’s fowlling the recharge process but doesn’t mention what brands?

:headbang2Ok so I need to go back to school....dahh...but why is my last post showing up in black text

Though on the other end I saw this awsome South American Cichlid Bright Red LFS said he was about twenty five years old he was massive:WHOA: Don't think I'm brave enough for Paranha......lol.

I have no experience with those other filters but will say that I hate the FX5s on my 180g... with filter padding the clog too soon and spit particles and microbubbles. I have since stripped the whole canister and use only bio and it's gotten better.

keeping a large and well stocked cichlid tank I like to run a wet/dry along with canisters to fill the stand.
My 180g runs 2x FX5 and a proclear 200 wet/dry with a magdrive9.5 return, to increase circulation in the tank I am running 2x Koralia evo1400.

I use purigen and love it! will never have a tank without it again! I have been using purigen for maybe 5-6yrs now and don't see a single negative about it. I normally don't recharge though cause it's cheap for what it's worth, I use Amquel+plus so no problems with it reacting bad with the purigen, I think the only ones you have to worry about is anime based de-chlors like stresscoat. Use Amquel or seachem prime, IME the two best dechlors you could buy.

I run my purigen in a media reactor, on my 180 I normally run 1L at a time.
