Hi'

Im always having problems with my tank overflowing when i try to upgrade the return pump where the water cannot get from the tank to the sump quick enough.
All the filter media is in the green water but, the water passes over and then go's to the little container with the heaters and return pump in it.

Atm ive got a 1500lph pump and could do with around 6000lph throughput as its a 1000litre tank.
Please see the below pictures of the setup and any advice changes would be great. The overflow holes are 1.5-2inch if i remember correctly.

will give that a go, although id imagine the problem is more with the overflow and pipes as the tank overflows so its as if the water cant get into the overflows fast enough

This might seem obvious, but have you checked your overflow pipes for obstructions?

I´d also do the math and check the capacity of those overflows at the narrowest point. You already have two different diameter pipe going from the display tank to the sump. How much more are your bulkheads restricting?

Don´t know it this would be an issue in this kind of set-up but is there any chance trapped air is hindering the flow?

Good Luck!

Not sure if air can get trapped or how i would check if it was, the overflow pipes are the same size.

might try change my 90o bits for 2 45o ones and see if this helps , starting so see my arse with the sump setup might just scrap it and go back to filters.

Been spending most my working day looking at other setups would the below help?
Having a bit of the pipe in the water so that no air can get into and for some reason most have a t connection with a hole at the top?

If you are able to drill the tank, I would do a herbie or beananimal overflow setup. These will make flow problems a thing of the past.

Spot on :D I will give this a go, i have a smaller hole a little higher on the other end of the tank which has an up turned pipe on it so shouldnt need the emergency valve but i will change my pipe work to match the others, i guess it is the air thats causing the problem atm then... Thought the two holes in my tank should be able to handle a lot more water than what they currently are :)

Just a quick question though do you need the shut of valve? My tank is in the shed and the floor is concreate so not botherd about water going on it, for maintenance atm i just take the pipes off and let the water pour onto the floor intil it go's below my overflow.

I cant get a pipe to fit to the inside of the my tank which is causing a bit of a headache. Really realy hate sumps and pipe work. On my next tank im paying someone to come round and do it all for me! Trying to find the bits is near on imposible!
