Just curious as I'm having these brown outbreaks in my 90G on my glass walls and on rocks, however my water column is clear.

I've reduced lighting to 6-8 hours a day. (T5HO coralife fixture on a 90Gallon cichlid tank with lace rock and aragonite substrate)

What about a UV sterilizer? Would this take away the algae? I know it only kills in the water column but that would stop the algae from spreading and over time kill it off.

Any other suggestions?

how much light are you running? is the tank planted? chances are you have too much light. if you have no plants then run one bulb. you'll probably be able to leave them on longer. I have a 120 gal. with only floating plants. I run led's for 12 hours and one 54w t8 for 5 hours for the plants. whatever little algae I may have my bn pleco takes care of. there are other reasons for algae, but lighting is the no.1 culprit.

I think it was a water change issue.

I have the lights on for 8 hours a day with a timer now. It's a 90G nonplanted South African setup.

I did a 50% water change and the algae was seriously stunted and diminished. About 2 weeks later I am seeing it make a comback. Looks like I have to just figure out the right percentage of waterchange to do per week and I should be ok.
