WC geophagus ID thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The only one I can Id is the Pelligrini 2nd pic. All beautiful pickup 's.

#1 - ? need to see the caudal marking
#2 - Geophagus pellegrini
#3 - Geophagus argyrostictus
#4 - Satanoperca leucosticta (most likely) however it could be Satanoperca mapiritensis as it has the correct muzzle spangling and lack of spotting on the flanks, specifically under the dorsal. My only hesitation is nuchal shape but that can go either way IME. I an more inclined to believe it to be Satanoperca mapiritensis, although less likely. It is one or the other between the two species though, that is for certain.

Any idea on collection points? That helps narrow things down much more so that just visual confirmation.

The first picture looks almost exactly like Geophagus sp. Caqueta being sold by Jeff at Tangled Up In Cichlids:

According to his description they are an undescribed Geo from the town of Puerto Rico in Caqueta, Colombia, found in the Rio Guayas.

JK47 is correct on the other 3 IDs.

Thanks JK47 JK47 for the IDs! And yes FishKing5 FishKing5 these are available with my local supplier. I believe the catchpoints are somewhere in Brazil, not Columbia.

Would you be willing to help me out with getting some geophagus then from your supplier? Feel free to message me or text me at 7153384148 or email is fine as well. Thanks so much

I can't speak of the others but pellegrini come out of Columbia...

As do S. leucosticta/mapiritensis... the only oddball on the list would be argyrostictus. But honestly there are some exporters who combine fish from multiple regions, so they don't all necessarily get caught in the same location.
