Thinking of finally getting a wc pump and most of the year I can run a hose out the patio door which is 2 feet away but how about winter? I live in the Chicago area and have a dog so I don’t want him getting hurt running and slipping on ice. Has anyone discharged their dirty tank water outside in winter in a similar climate? If so does it ice up bad or mostly soak into the ground? I’m trying to determine how much hose to buy.

I'd say extra hose, didn't keep fish up north, but I've ate ass slipping on beer that froze to my front steps in MT.

Mine runs 24/7 year round in ohio… i put in 100’ of 4” pvc a foot under ground to a storm drain tho. Before i was on constant water change/ auto drips i did just “discharge” out in the yard. Do u have a storm ditch/drain near by or even a downspout from a gutter that does? Id connect a line into there so its more “permanent” and not actually just in the yard. IME running through 4” pvc, it will not ever freeze up even in winter. Gotta be a gutter down spout somewhat close by to where ur draining water. Im also on a septic system tho that can’t handle the amt of water i use daily, y i pump outside. If u have a sink or bathtub indoors and reg plumbing/sewer its probably less trouble to just use ur regular indoor drains with a long hose.

My downspouts don’t go into the ground and the nearest storm drainer is behind the fence in far corner of my yard , maybe 60’ from door. We have sewers so I can just run a hose to my tub without issue, it’s really only 4’ from where I hookup my python. I have a 240g with 75g sump, do you think a 600gph would be good?

Sounds like no need to “dump” outside then with sewers and easy access to a tub. With 600gph thatd b 30min to drain half. Not too bad. Have to account for all the hose so id go atleast around 800-1k gph range. Any pump u have is better than just siphon. Whatever works or is affordable tho.

Thanks, I’ll start looking for a cheapo Amazon pump and some hose

Since I lived in Milwaukee until 7 years ago, I know of what you speak.
From about mid Nov to late march, I'd send old water down a drain.
I ran semi-permanent PVC to my garden, and rain barrels but detached it in the deep freeze months.

I don't know if you use a sump? but I put a on/off valve on the line to the sump, would attach my outflow to the garden to a sump line,.
When doing a water change, close the flow to the sump, and water would be sent outside. No extra pump. When the sump was drained to pump intake level, open the valve, and start adding new water.
BTW I ran my sumps almost full, similar to the current planted sump/refugium on the right below

I ran a similar setup to Duanes so i could water the garden while doing water changes but the city fined me for having the rain barrel. Mag750 on 3/4 flexible pvc ran through a hole in plywood I used around my window A/C tank chiller until i installed a floor drain in my living room. Now I pump out the front door in summer and the drain in winter. The line wasn't long enough to make it all the way to the storm drain and you wouldn't want to walk near there in winter. I basically made a luge track out of the ditch when the mercury dropped for extended stretches but the flex pvc never froze completely
750 gph takes way to long IMO but that old pump refuses to die so I keep using it but it opt for about 1300gph if I were to replace it.
