I'm newer to poly's and am more familiar with WC cichlids from africa.

My question is how can you guys tell wc from cb.

In cichlids it's almost impossible to tell sometimes so usually Importation paperwork is provided, or something comparable. Pretty sure all my poly are CB but i really have no clue.

I'm no expert but I think that more than anything there are visual clues with pattern and, uh, maybe dorsal fin shape? that clue in people to the fact that a poly is CB. And also some patterns/morphology that will tell experienced pros what collection point various polys come from as well.

Theres a couple ways to tell. First is where did you get it from. If you got it from a petco or petsmart it is most likely CB. Another way to tell is if the poly has any deformities

Also WCs aren't cheap normally. Price is a good clue. Be careful of rip offs though, if you look at a bunch of pictures of adult wild delhezi, then compare them to adult CB delhezi, the difference is striking IMO. Patterns are much smaller and less pronounced with farm CB

But if someone bred their WC bichirs then those CBs would be of good quality, inbreeding and lack of good care in the farms leads people to pine for WCs more then CBs. Many people in Asia and Japan do breed CB beautys, but they are small operations focused on quality.

If its a Senegal, delhezi, ornate or endlicheri and really small, most likely they're cb. That's how it is in my area at least. Visually, I'm not very good but I do know that wc gets larger than cb. So if yours were really small when you got them, they're probably cb.

You can't really use that logic with UJ cause they most often come in VERY small if they are WC. With LJ though they usually come in larger if they're WC. However if you see a large poly in the store it doesn't necessarily keen that it's WC.

^ don't forget that WC Lowers can also be small, its rare, but JA has tiny BV endlis to prove it haha. Can't wait to get mine in

This is just my observation and most of the bichir enthusiast here in the philippines although not 100% sure aside from the way its been labeled, priced etc. The head is flat for both UJ and LW. For LJ its jaw really protrudes.

I know my lfs always advertises any fish as CB when they are because they think they are easier to keep for some reason. Never quite made sense to me but I guess some people buy it.
