Well I may have been a little impatient. Now at 36-48 hours after laying, have about seventeen white eggs. Still plenty look like they have been fertilized. I have a pair of convicts (in a different tank) that just moved free swimmers this morning. Was hoping to try to introduce some of these fry in with theirs to see if they will raise them. Don’t know if that works or if the timing is going to be right. Have to get these that far first I guess!
Eggs have hatched! Have a big wad of wigglers this morning. I’m afraid now the work begins. So many different ways to try... I do have a tank for the parents if the fry start getting picked off. Just hope I’m around soon enough if it all turns south! The convict brood is about seven days ahead of this one. Any opinions out there about trying to infiltrate that brood with some of these after they start swimming?
It`s certainly worth a try. Super nice looking pair by the way. I hope the female has a hide in case the male goes nutsoide on her. I`d hate to see you loose her.
Thanks! I bred them with a divider in place. I have it out right now, as she hadn't been on her side since laying. There is a log she can fit in that he can't as well. I am keeping the divider close by and I'm watching them closely. He hasn't shown any aggression at all since they laid out. She is doing all the tending right now, and barely lets him visit much! I expect the fry to be swimming today or tonight.
Day 8:
Free swimming now. Parents seem to be doing a good job so far. Hardly any aggression towards each other. Start today feeding Hikari First Bites and also kens fish golden pearls. Hopefully the parents will help out also. Want to start daily water changes to speed growth, but don’t want to freak the parents out either.
Day 10:
Fry really starting to move around the tank. Mama trying hard to keep them herded up!
They are grazing really well on the rocks and side of the pot. Looks to be at least 200 at this point, but really hard to get a very good count. Parents still seem to be doing a great job. Even dad helping out moving the babies around, though he’s not nearly as gentle as mom spitting them out!
