I now have a rock full of eggs heavily guarded by my ZZ Red Dragon female and Carpintis male! WOO HOO! Now for the problem, they are in a 125 gallon with 5 other cichlids and loaches. (No fish is over 5 inches and some will be weeded out but for now thats who is in there) Surprisingly, minimal aggression with this mix! Ok so I guess I need to put up a divider mainly to keep those loaches away! Do I separate only the female with the eggs or her and the male? :screwy: They are both actively defending their area which is luckily near the left edge of the tank. I am pretty excited and would appriciate some advice as I have only ever bred africans and of course convicts! ;)

Ok. Since nobody gave me any advise I decided to separate only the female with the eggs. They seem to be doing pretty good, a few white but the majority are still clear. Hope I get a good batch of fry!

I leave my fish with eggs alone with 3 plecs in a 110 g tank. No dividers, just dont turn all the lights out to let the male and female see where the other fishes are. Parents will defends eggs to the death ... well some will..

cool. thank you! I already have the divider up. does the male need to be in there too or is it fine with just her since there is no more threat?

Profesional breeders removes the males, some even remove both and incubate artificially to prevent any losses as some parents eat the eggs. Since I dont sell fish for a living, most of the time I let mom and dad guard the eggs and fry. IMHO, seeing the parental care of cichlids is one the "Fun" factors in this hobby. I say leave both parents with eggs and fry.... of course there are times that parents eat their eggs and fry....
