weaning Mr. Yarrelli

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
how long since he's eaten? Never kept one but they might be hard to get off live. Being such a good pred. they might only eat live in the wild I don't know. If not he's gonna be expensive to feed when he gets 6 feet:WHOA: But a pure badass fish though.

just pick up one too , finish eating five feeders , stomach bulging..

You may have already tried this, but try again if you have. I had a TSN that wouldnt eat anything but live, so i would harpoon a rosie/small goldfish on a clear 3' 1/4" air line tube with a small piece of shrimp or smelt and dangle it in front of him. He was hesitant at first but soon started realizing it was easy food. After a week or two i tried just the shrimp with no rosie and he was so used to just grabbing it i'm not even sure he new the differance :D He's been eating out of my hand for a few months now.

I've done this a few times on various cats and it has always worked so far.

Good luck and be patient.

yea I've tried that he still touches nuthin but feeders I'm going to let him get up to a more stable size of AT LEAST 10in. before I start my rigerous weaning he's the 1ST FISH I've ever had problems weaning I even got my florida gar to eat cichlid pellets

my featherback knives I got them from live to now eating shrimp

bichirs no problem

I've weaning countless shovelnose cats including tiger shovelnose
I've weaned leaf fish
needle nose gar, silver gar

just to name a few preds I've weaned

LAST NIGHT I stayed there and watched a rosy red "dance" on the yarrellis nose for AT LEAST 3 or 4 Good minutes but the yarrelli could see me so the rosy kept his life for that moment

STILL VERY SHY

the reason i think your not having any luck is because yarelli have very poor vision, i think they depend on the movement from live prey. all the food you have tried doesnt move. try live night crawlers. I got mine from aquascape too, and they told me they were giving him goldfish. but i try not to feed live feeder fish so the first thing i offered him was night crawlers. I give him 3 feeders about once every month just cuz i like to see him hunt. mine will pound anything. he is like a freakin oscar. as soon as you open the top he races up thinking he is about to get fed. he even chases fingers. i had the same issue with my black devil cat and my tigrinus but i starved them and they started to take the night crawlers. in the future if you want your fish to eat a certain food offer them that first. a fish like the yarelli are always anxious to eat you'll get it in time. patience my friend, starve for a week. i starved my tig for 2. the longest its ever taken me to wean a fish on to a new food was 3 months of constant starving.
