can i keep a weather loach in my pond all year or does it get to cold here in the uk . at worst it gets to -10 degress but i cover my pond and it stays at around 5 .c

It gets colder than that where I live and they survive in the wild. You might need a little supplemental heat or a very deep pond but you might very well have success.

Be warned that if a group of that fish escapes....they'll survive in the wild and reproduce. Measures should be taken to assure your pond cannot flood and debris from the pond never contacts and water that will in turn see wild water (don't flush anything down the drain).

thanks man

any other opinions just to help me make up my mind

are we talking about Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, the common type you see at pet shops? if so, i was wondering the same thing.

i know this thread is old but i wanted to know how did it work out for you?

anyone else ever try it?

they thrive in lake washington if that helps

this is promising! if we're taking about the same fish...

I think they would do fairly well as long as the water doesn't get bellow freezing for long. I havn't tried it personally, but i would like to.

I had them weather over into a 100G pond that I dug into the area just below the biggest above ground spring that feeds my farm pond here in Westminster, MD. They had no issues and the water is extremely cold even in the height of summer. It was reading 12 - 13 degree Celsius last month! It stayed below 0 C for around a two week stretch with nothing remotely like a challenge for them.

Bass_Cats, I sure hope that you meant the air temperature does not get below freezing for long! Pure 100% freshwater is NOT in a liquid state at that temperature! You can probably count the fish on one hand with fingers to spare that survive minutes inside of solid ice!

The only one that comes to mind right now is some tiny "salt water" ice fish near the north pole that generate enormous heat (something like 200 F) from a bone protuberance in their head allowing them to basically "swim" in solid ice. They hunt in large groups and tunnel under their land prey (Usually emperor penguins) on the ice.

The good thing about air temperature in relation to freshwater is that ice makes a fantastic insulator! Once the surface layer is frozen over to a depth of 12" or so, the water beneath would very rarely freeze in any areas that we humans inhabit! Dojos do not require air to breath and would not be killed by a surface freeze.

frasertheking, make sure that the pond is around 2' deep and you are good to go!

are you joking about your whole post, or just this part?
you know damn well emperor penguins live at the SOUTH pole!

Ice borers can teleport from the north pole to the south pole. There has been some sightings of the ice borer in the Himalaya Mountians providing heat for the Yetti shin diggs!

Fear the ice borer!
