What is their cold tolerance like? Can they survive being kept in an outdoor pond setup (like you can use for Goldfish and Koi) in the Northern USA or Southern Canada? Has anyone ever tried this?

I've seen articles on them on a couple pond sites... I don't know much about ponds but weather loaches naturally live in water as cold as around 41 degrees fahrenheit and can tolerate temps as low as around 36 degrees. A guy who was keeping them in his pond mentioned that they should have something to burrow into in the winter like sand or soil.
Hope that helps.

I've heard they aren't recommended for outdoor ponds but that might be more out of concern for their potential to invade local waterways.

There is few breeding populations of weather loaches in northern states such as Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan so I guess they can survive harsh winters.
