Anyone here do web design? I have a question that I am not sure about. I don't need a site designed, I'm redoing my own, but I have a question about what to do once the redesigned site is done and figured someone that does web design probably would known the answer to this. Here's the deal....

I run my own small business building custom fly rods, been pretty successful for the past 18 yrs of running it but now my website is just getting outdated looking, I want to be able to update it myself etc etc. The guy that made my site for me and set it up with the host company quite years ago so kind'a left me high & dry as to being able to do anything with it myself. So a couple months ago I started building a new updated site with that WIX site builder. It actually looks really good and has all the features I want. Once I am done with the new updated site I plan to transfer my domain name I have had for the past 18 yrs to it, but here's the question. How do I then replace my current existing site with the new updated one? My knowledge of stuff like that is not quite up to snuff and kind'a lost on how that works.

I could be wrong (as I'm not really a web designer), but here's my opinion: unless you can contact the guy who set up your original website (or maybe someone at the company he was working for) -- as only he/they have admin privileges to do anything with your old domain/site -- you could be kind of screwed insofar as putting your new WIX-made content on your old domain. If you contacted the hosting company, explained the situation to them and maybe proved ownership of the content and business, they might help out (or maybe help you to get in touch with the guy) but I'm really not sure, worth a try maybe.

In fact I could face a similar problem in the not too distant future; my website is about 14 yrs old and also really needs updating (e.g. esp. making it mobile friendly lol). Like you I haven't been in touch with the web guy who set it up for quite a while and not sure he's even still around. I really need to check on that because if not I too could could be screwed, which would be lame as our older sites have higher Google ranking due to longevity, with a new site it can take a long time to get decent ranking results.

Good luck and let us know how it works out eventually.

The guy that build my website worked for the company that still hosts it. He had quit years ago though. I'll try contacting the host company and see what they say. Doubt I'm screwed though, the site was built through the same company that still hosts it, I just don't have the same guy is all that I can contact. I'll drop them an email and see what they say though thanks.

That's great, sounds like you should be ok -- me I don't know yet, my web guy is/was a free lancer (really nice guy but suffering from alcohol and depression issues, he just disappears for months then re-surfaces).

Damn that sucks man sorry to hear that. It really does suck to no be able to do anything with your website doesn't it. That's why I'm hoping to get mine switched over soon as I can. If I can get this new one switched then I'll be able to update it myself which will make things a lot easier. Have you looked into the Wix site builder at all yourself? It seems pretty straight forward so far.

I haven't used Wix; considered it at the the time about a year ago but for some reason(s) I can't remember I went with Weebly. Pretty happy with the way the site turned out, and overall it's quite easy to use and make adjustments too, I'm sure quite similar to Wix.

One thing about Weebly though (but not at all sure if same is true for Wix): given the way it's set up, it has some internal structural issues -- which maybe aren't so terrible in and of themselves, but which cause some issues with Google's site testing page (https://testmysite.thinkwithgoogle.com/). This gives many Weebly pages lower scores (which could result in lower ranking if Google thinks your page is too slow or has other issues).

As a side point if you need any help with developing your site there are plenty of cheap but decently good semi-pro/pro web designers on fiverr.com -- I used a good guy on there to help fluff up this other website and take care of some more complex things.

My stepdaughter is a web designer. She also does contract work. If you want to, I can give you her email in private conversation.

Thanks jaybird. I sent an email yesterday to my host company so waiting to see what they say back. If it turns out I'm gonna be over my head (my web building/hosting knowledge is pretty limited) then I may ask you for her contact.

Okay. She's really good. She can do whatever needs to be done. Just let me know.
