Hello Lads and Lassies
In about three weeks (beginning of may) time I am planing my first monster tank build. I'm planing 4' x 28" x 28"1/2 tank which would be about 165 Gallons (I know, I know not really that big of a tank but I think I can just squeeze into the monster tank category). My tank is going to be a glass tank with wood framing. The reason for this is so I can avoid having to seal the wood wit epoxy or liquid rubber and instead only use silicone. My main question revolves around glass thickness. My front (and back) are going to be made of two 4 ft by 14 inch pieces of 9mm glass. The sides are made of two 28 and half inch by 14 inch pieces of 9mm. Using the glass thickness calculator i come up with a required thickness of 12mm for a 28 inch deep tank. However, because I am stacking two pieces of glass on top of each other I will be having a piece of wood running over the seem and possibly one going vertically in the middle. My question then is whether 9mm glass is strong enough to withstand the water pressure at 28 inches deep if the piece is only 12 inches tall (factored for wood covering some of the glass).
Also how thick should my wood be. Do I need two by fours (probably very excessive) or maybe I could just use 1 by 3's or any other combination of wood.
