That would be a subadult Crenicichla sp. 'tapajos II'

They must not maintain the spotting through to adulthood then?

Yup, as they get closer to adulthood they change over completely. Their color changes are a quite a bit more dramatic than most of the Lugubris pikes.

Great read and I can't wait until part 2. I must say out of all my Crenicichla I do love my Cobra the most. Amazing temperment and Color changes are out of this world.
