So I am looking at building a filter for a 250 gallon pond.

I have a couple ideas that I have mocked up. The larger rectangle in the tank or hanging off the back represents a 5 gallon bucket. I'm planing to shoot for around 600gph flow. The pond will be planted and lightly stocked with gold fish. The top fill versions would have a macro filter in the form of holes drilled in the buckets lid, then a course medium, fine and finally lavarock around the pump. The bottom fill would have lavarock, course and then finally finThey each have there own advantages in my mind but I would like to see what you think about the following.

Bottom fill vs top fill thoughts?
