My boyfriend I are planning to move houses in the next few months.
As we are moving to Amsterdam the floors there are usually old wooden floors and I am worried about my tank crashing through.

Right now I've got a 120G, and hoping to upgrade in a years time.

My question is, is there something you can do to help distribute the weight? Obviously I cannot just tear up the whole floor and rebuild it.

Any options?

You can always put braces underneath the flooring.

Thanks for the article... :)

The problem with old dutch houses is that they were constructed mostly back in 1900. So, I don't think back then they were designing houses as sturdy as they do now.

There are some buildings from the 30's - 70's which are better built in many ways, but often those buildings are not as nice (and certainly lack the character) that we are looking for.

But I'll certainly have a structure person coming in anyway as the most potential house we are looking at the moment we want to do a fair amount of work to.

this article may help some:

I'm hoping to go to a 200g...
But, if that isn't possible then I'll stick to the 120.

My other option is also to perhaps have 2 smaller tanks rather than one large one - but I'm not as keen on that option.

Is this difficult to do? Would I need to rip out the entire floor?

Sorry for such girl questions!

Do the houses over their have a crawl space? Here is what I did with my floor. Block and a 4X4 with a 2X6 supporting the floor joist.

You might be surprissed on how some of the old houses floors are built. My house im in now is a frame house built in the late 1920's raised about 3 foot of the ground level. i too was a lil worry on how it would hold up to my tanks. as of now my living room (12x10 roughly) is supporting 75g w/ stand, 60g w/ stand, 28g w/ stand, 30g salt w/ stand and a 40g breeder w/stand (including a coach, chair, 2 end tables , entertainment center w/ tv, xbox360 and 500 dvds...lol) i have the 75g and 60 on the same wall, 30g and the 40 g on the same wall and the 28g and the entertainment on another togeather. the floor holding up nicely. chances are your floor will probley hold the 120. however anything bigger you might want to add a lil suport from underneath.

good luck and let us know what the outcome is :)

Alot of those old houses are built really well, I live in a 1890s house built by pennsylvania dutch farmers. There are massive beams in the basement
Just find the beams and put tank on top of beams.

As posted above, floor supports are very easy to do, even for a girl.:D:grinno:

Glad with all these replies...makes it feel less scary!

I was starting to have visions of tanks crashing through the floor and fish just flopping everywhere!

Or having to tear up the whole house!
