Is he floating with his head hanging down and his tail towards the top? If so, that's normal behavior. That's what mine did during the daylight hours. While young it helps camouflage them, making them look like a leaf or a floating plant.

yeah head up tail down so i will watch him while lights are off to see what happens to see if he acts like a normal fish. if not then i guess he is sick.

My knife still does this. I have had him for about 18 months. Put a feeder in the tank and if doesn't go for it then you may want to start investigating.

I also have a pair of convict cichlids that i cant stand!!!they wont let the knife fish have his space i am going to take them out and put a feeder fish or something in there..

Wow 2-3 inches....such a baby.....how bigs your tank? These guys get big.

It is only a 55gal.....Yes i know they grow to be huge and the tank is to small but he has a long way to go before he gets to the size to out grow the tank.. unless they are very fast growers

They are. I've seen posts from 3"ers go to about 16" in a year or so. I'm sure larger CK owners will chime in soon.
Mine grew a little over an inch in less than 3 weeks. Great eater, flake and beef heart.
