I'm fairly new to acrylic tanks. I've had glass tanks for most of my life. Currently I have a 750G acrylic and 400G acrylic.

When the 750 is getting a serious amount of water placed in or taken out, during water changes, I sometimes hear these odd popping type noise here and there. There are no noises whatsoever when the tank is full, only when a significant amount of water is being taken out or put back in.

The prior owner of the tank claimed the noises (which I heard once or twice when he was draining the tank) are related to the water pressure coming off the tank/steel stand. The acrylic on this tank (made by ATM) is very thick.

My guy who does my maintenance examined the entire tank, saw no seam issues, no issues with the stand, no leaks whatsoever. He said it was bone dry under the stand and around the tank.

My maintenance guy's theory is also pressure related, but he believes it is water pressure coming off the overflow, which on this tank is located directly in the center. He told me not to worry about it. A second maintenance guy also told me not to worry about it after examining the entire tank and stand, but with a 750G tank I sometimes have nightmares just imaging the kind of flood that much water could create in the house.

Has anyone else had this happen to their acrylic tank or heard similar noises during water changes? Is the pressure theories I'm getting accurate?

Ive never owned acrylic but that sounds accurate to me, thats a ton of pressure being let off or put onto the tank.

Put a level on the tank full and at WC low point see if there is an change. Try this on all sides.

At the low point of your next WC , try to slide a thin shim anywhere between the tank and stand. Then try that between the stand and floor. If there is a gap the acrylic or stand might be flexing a bit. Over time might cause a weak spot...

If you find any gap, you could easily slide a wood shim in there to relive some pressure to that area.

Wooden floor creaking?

I have 2 360g tanks. Both different dimensions. I built one of them myself from the ground up. Never heard creaking or popping sounds.

I would assume the entire bottom of the tank is supported?

Possibly a broken spot weld on the stand?

Or just send the tank my way :)
Good luck.

I had something similar happen to me when I was doing water changes, turns out it was my heater as the waterline went below the minimum level it started making a popping sound!

If the water level goes well below the minimum level line on your heater during wc, I hope you're turning the heater off during these wc, because if its glass, it could ultimately crack (and/or fail from over heating)...........speaking from past experience

In regards to the OP's issue, I also believe its the stand flexing that's making those noise

All of my acrylic tanks have styrofoam under them and when I do water changes it does pop. The first time it happened I got scared and thought my tank was cracking! Come to find out that it does that every time I do water changes from the weight change. After a dozen or so water changes the popping hardly existed.
