Hi ALl,

Need some help
I have a frontosa that has some weird peeling on his dorsal fin and anal fin.

On closer inspection, he seems to have patches on the body similar to the fins.
It looks like peeling skin all the other fish are fine just this one.
they have been int he tank about 2 years and have been healthy.
Parameters seem ok
Nitrate is around 20

This frontosa just sits on the sand has been like it for a week or 2 so far I have just been keeping the water clean with changes.

Any suggestions?

Personally would test the parameters and post them. Sounds like a Bacterial infection issue. Are there any tankmates?

I'm stumped, it almost seems like a chemical burn of some type, but that wouldn't make sense if it is just this one fish. neutrino neutrino may be able to help?

When it comes to all things Cypho related, neutrino neutrino is definitely the gent to tag. :)

I can't say that I have ever seen such peeling in a mature group of fish, that otherwise all seem healthy.

OP - is this fish being singled out at all, as in being picked on by the dominant fish?

Based just on that photo, looks like damage from a scrape or physical injury to me. Any branches/driftwood/rocks in the tank that he (or she) could have gotten scraped on if he ran into them? They have a tendency to bolt when startled and can run into things and do some damage if anything's in the way-- and they sometimes startle for little apparent reason. Or if they're nearing breeding age, there could be some chasing or battling, again causing one to bolt into something. Did it show up suddenly? And just to cover the bases, what's your pH?

Only real experience I have with actual peeling skin is old fish nearing the end of the line (soon as I see hints of that I euthanize them), though I know there are some conditions that can cause it in otherwise healthy fish-- bacteria infection, serious problem with water, etc.

Nitrate at 20 if everything else is good shouldn't be a problem at all. I knew a guy who used to be a very successful front breeder in Australia and he let nitrates get a good bit higher than 20 between water changes because of water use restrictions where he was. He never had problems with them.

No seen much chasing although they do have a habit of behaving when I am watching them.

Yes did show up suddenly ph is 8 maybe slightly over .

One other thing the mrs pointed out she plugged in a air freshener next to the tank a few weeks ago but I have never had that cause any problems what do you think?
