Weird polypterus

So i recently installed a repticlear in my 10g which is where i keep my 3.5" polypterus senegalus. Iv had him for a good 4 months and hes only managed to grow horizontally (which i dont mind). Whats weird here is that after installing the new filter i often catch him perched on top of the filter, its actually confidently positioned well enough that hes right at the waters edge when on top of it. Is this normal for a poly? Do they like to bask or something?

It's perfectly normal. Juvi bichirs LOVE to float on the surface of the water. It's a natural behaviour in the wild to blend in with the floating plant so they can hide from predators.

When my bichirs were 3 to 4 inches long, they always perched beside the filter uptake which pissed me off. I thought they got stuck or something.

Now at 5 inches, they just stay at the bottom of the tank.

Ahh i see now. Well this means mine will be doing this forever cuz he might not grow lol. Hopefully he does, but either way i like him
