I just recently discovered a type of fish that I am really excited about having. They are called African Butterfly Fish. By no means are they large "monsters", but from what I have researched so far is that they are aggressive eaters that are fun to watch.

My question is about how to house them. They need a higher PH level (6.5-7.5) with a "softer" water hardness. They also like shallow water with plants and floating plants. If I were to create a planted habitat for them, where would I start? They do not get very big, 4" max, and like a lot of surface area. I am thinking of going with a 29g long, and putting a few plants in that would live happily with them. They like 72-82degree water and I am unsure what types of plants can live in those conditions.

I am sorry if this is a silly question to post, I just want to provide the best home for my fish when I get them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you.

I am mostly concerned that the plants in the tank will hurt my fish. I keep reading, and it seems that some people keep planted tanks with no fish, or only fish for the pure aesthetic value, but I care about the health of my fish over the plants. That is more to my question. :) I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction! I have read the sticky about planted tanks and all and I still don't know if the plants can hurt the PH and hardness of water!

Try searching this site for info about your fish's natural habitat & research what kind of plants are found there. I would think some Anubias at least, but I'm sure theres more. If not, you can use Java Moss to make some overhangs for him.

EDIT: There's really no reason not to plant the tank. It can't really hurt him unless you screw up really bad & dump fertilizers or something. You will have to monitor KH & hardness, but thats not usually an issue with standard tap water.

Thanks! I have done a lot of reading and found a good combination. :) I will try to get pics up soon!
