What kind of names are snakeheads sold under in your part of the world?

Here in Japan we have some funny ones....listen to this..

C.lucius= Almond snakehead
C.auranti= Violet snakehead
C.Plero= Flower toman
C.ornatipinnis= Blue moon snakehead

I a not too sure where those names come from, but they always make me smile a bit.....:grinno:

have not really seen channa in my lfs....but the one's i have were red snakehead, green snakehead,blue snakehead, then all the other place's i see on internet are marked with there latin name.......bet there is alot of funny names however

Hi,its too bad that some people invent their own names for snakeheads,why not use their scientific names,things would be easier and simple.

yes they are a real pain in the ass , there is really no excuse for not useing the scientific names for the discrided species.

the worst offender - red snakeheads cobra snakeheads ,golden cobra snakeheads, green snakeheads , 3 spot snakeheads , burma pretty snakehead, blue rainbows snakehead , rainbow snakehead.

the big problems come when the fish is not yet discribed , then they have no real name so the exporter make there own up , and since a new species of snakeheads is big money they offen lie about the location in the name

sp assam , sp kerela five stripe are just two obvious ones ,neither come from the place stated in the name .
the other motive is to make them sound more exciting and worth more money at the same time .

latest ones are sp. fire and ice , sp fantasy , sp. super nova , sp galaxy blue , it is also a ongoing joke throughout the channa world that the word blue in the title means it must be worth more money , often there may be only the vvery slightest hint of blue in the fish , but who is going to pay big bucks for a fish named sp dull blue , or sp mostly grey .

like every thing else it all comes down to the money side of things

cheers col
