Okay so I have a 10 gallon tank and o have a aqua tech 30-60 gallon filter and sand my tank keeps getting this white build up on thw glass and when I scrape it of it comes of but comes back in a few days I so water changes about once a week. And the tank only has one fish ( red tail catfish) and he's a baby. Any suggestions? My water does have extremely high iron could that be it?

I have the same issue but don't worry the white build up is mainly due to excess light . Any pictures of your tank ? may be I could help. How active is your fish ? any build up on the fish?

Switch of all filtration,air-stones etc. in short stop all water flow , Scrape it off, wait for half an hour(the residue will settle down)and then do a gravel vac. with gentle movements hopefully you should siphon most of it out. Repeat weekly. till it clears out!

I actually can't do a gravel vac it has a sand bottom . I have pictures but I have no idea how to from my phone the tank is a 10 gallon with a big filter and a baby red tail catfish he eats extremely well. 1 night Crawler every 24 hours. I'd like to get it figured out. I'm goinng to pick up a tank today foe hhim that is larger. My other tank also has the same problem ( 2 channel Catfish 1 cray fish and a large bull head Catfish and a few shinners)

I have sand and vacuum it with almost every water change, and jam the vac tube into the sand.
Catfish are gluttons and will eat much more than they need to, often leading to overfeeding.
I wonder it the white stuff is a bacterial or fungal reaction to overfeeding and then not doing enough of a water change, often enough. Planeria can also appear as a white haze, and show up when conditions are very eutrophic.
If I had a redtail in a 10 gallon, I'd be doing a 40% water change every day.

I had a similar issue before. When I asked my lfs about it, they said the water conditioner I was useing had aleo vera in it which was causing my glass to go foggy and white. I switched to Prime, and havnthad that issue since.
