I have the opportunity to buy an old coral tank with weird dimension cheap. What could I keep in a 44 by 44 that's only 9 inches high? Thinking I would need to go bare bottom. Anyone ever used one of these before?

Hey! I have a couple 4'x2'x16" in storage. One will be an African Butterfly fish set up with some bottom dwellers and the other I plan to use as a planted community tank. I don't know of many fish that would care for the shallow depth of only 9" of water besides bottom dwellers. You'll have trouble with suicidal fish unless you make a frame to make the sides taller(glass or netting.) I'm interested to hear what others may recommend.

I would love to have that tank for a grow out for ray pups.....I'll buy it from u lol

9 inches is tough.....like stated before you will prob have to cover it or build a taller glass frame (brace) around it......personally I'd hate to cover it defeats the rimless look

Only thing I can think of is a planted tank with tetras...that's still a risk for jumpers

Like jwh said a terrapin Turtle tank would be cool

Thanks for the suggestion.....I wish I could use it as a ray grow out but they would out grow my 180 and that's the biggest tank I can have at the moment

You could only use it as a pup grow out with a big sump and temporarily til they are sold...as in newly born pups

I have a 72x24x15h and a 72x22x12 I have my piranhas in the 15h with a 70g sump but it is covered and they get starteled and hit the top frequently planning on using the other 12h As a crayfish grow out once I have babies

i have an old coral tank which is only 12" deep not quite a square though. i love it!!

i did have my raninus in there in a planted tank

old pic

now i'm growing out my goonch in it and only got it about 9- 10" water depth. best thing is it's about 55G but a footprint is huge, at 30"x40" so nearly 6ft square. mean you can grow out a bottom dweller to a good size because they have the turning room. especially cats that don't move that much.

you could have semi aquatic plants that will grow out the top too but i made a plexiglass top for mine
