my 2 new peacocks around 3plus inch each keep banging against the tank and going up and down the sides opening and closing their mouths. they are really shy when im near and lay motionless at the bottom. when im a few metres away they start doing that again. looks really weird...anyone can explain? looks like theyre trying to escape or smth haha. thanks!

Welcome to MFK!!!

There's nothing weird about it. They're new fish that need time to adjust to their surroundings. All of the lights and shadows are new to them.

Do they have any cover to conceal themselves?

Also, fingerling fish have a greater fight-or-flight instinct than adults do simply because their size makes them vulnerable to a larger number of predator species (including their own kind). The big dark moving silhouette that they see, of you, must look like a giant predator out to get them. They'll calm down as they adjust, get used to you and regular movements around their tank, and get some size on them.

hmm thanks! yea and their stress lines are almost perpetually there, sometimes makes me think theyre tems. heh. roughly how long would it take? i cant wait to see them active around the tank and smashing the feeders!

Mine took one to two weeks to calm down. But, it's different for all individual fish. Much depends on activity levels around the tank, light/shadows around them, level of cover in the tank, tankmate aggression, feeding competition, etc.
