Well i decided to spread my wings a little and join this site, my god i love it, not come by as much fun over here yet :headbang2

I am wayne from the UK and have been after building a nice big tank/aquarium for as long as i remember and found this site with help from a another forum member here in the UK .
I have recently built a conservatory and planned on getting a 54" x 40" x 26" tank, that ends there:naughty:, i have a bit of `spare` area to the side which is 10` x 7` so i can squeeze in a 9` x 5` x 3` tank :)

There is a lot to plan yet but i have been looing for a while on here in this section, i did think at first into building a brick/grp tank but then i though and seen the ply/grp tank will be much better i think, not sure yet on that.

My plan at first was to build the tank from breeze block with a foam insulation board then laminate over to a 5mm thicness so fully built into the con`y bu then i though a ply/grp tank would be better incase of leaks, i know, but you never know, if it did leak it would damage any of the house.
so upto know the plans are 18mm carcase with a 3"x2" frame/bearers spread evenly at around 24" around the tank on the outside then 4mm grp inside only. The veawing window is a single one of a 96" x 32" x 15mm ( 15mm being the uk size i can get or if price is good 19mm could be better safe than sorry ) upto know the price i have worked out is around £850 and that includes the £450 for the glass. i am going to have a look this weekend about the base and what footings i will need to do as i have have worked out that there will be near 4 ton in total weight.
I have a plan for a sump filter of around 180 (uk) gallon. And i have a soare pond pump that pushs a good 3000gph which i think is good for this as i believe it should shift 4 times the tank capacity which i work out to be 700g.

I have looked through a lot of this site for info and found it very usefull so a big thanks to the folk that have posted there adventures as it helps so many folk out.

So if anyone can give help on this wee project i would be glad to listen:)

I will be doing a build thread also on this but as its in the planning stage etc it will be in the new year i start it, i hope to do this correct from the start, dont think SWMBO will be impressed if it fills the con`y L:OL

take care all

wayne:)

Welcome,

If you have the money it is always better to go a little overkill on the viewing window in my opinion. Is there a reason you are going with glass over acrylic? Just wonder what your thoughts are on the 2, not that one is better than the other.

What are you going to using to seal the tank?

What are you going to put in the tank?

Welcome,

If you have the money it is always better to go a little overkill on the viewing window in my opinion. Is there a reason you are going with glass over acrylic? Just wonder what your thoughts are on the 2, not that one is better than the other.

I have not yet fully decieded on the window yet and still waiting for quotes on both acrylic and glass in 19mm, i did get a price on 25mm acrylic and it was the same price at £450 as the 15mm glass (n i was told i need atleast 50mm by a supplyer over here, over kill OTT i think, unless ? ), but i would much prefer to go with the 19mm galss if i can get a good price, supplyers over here seem a bit slow on the sales, maybe its because its a single sheet, whno knows.
I am not sure on acylic realy and to be honest the first thing is that it bows under pressure and i have not looked into it yet, i am about to look at a few post here tonite to see what folk think, also depends on price, i want to feel safe from flooding of the con`y.

To seal the tank, well the build is Ply with 4 layers of 450g matt, the corners wax filled for a nice radius, the window is either going to sit in a stainless stael frame fitted with SS bolts then glass siliconed in, with **** loadsa silicone, or when i have designed the carcase/frame fit it straight to the GRP frame, not fully decided on that either yet, i think it will be good either way but the SS frame will make it stronger.

A few have asked about the home owners, well many moons ago i had Bob, my baby, a tiger shovel nose cat (12)", also a motoro ray (6") with silver dollars, fire eel (12") etc, they were in a 8 x 2 x 2, they went because of naff relation ship, but now as things are better i want it again on a bigger and real scale:).

As this is planning for next year, maybe sooner a si need to extend the con`y aq bit to fit it in, i am thining of getting a 4x4x2 tank built to get some young uns to bring up, much prefer to get young fish than near fully grown ones from the start. Thing is this 4x4x2 will cost around £600 to get running when that will near build the tank, not including the extension for it to go in. i could get a second hand 5x2x2 to do it, we wil see in a bit aabout that.
