If you guys remember, I bought a lima shovelnose and a black ghost knifefish at the beginning of the month from Aqua Scape. The BGK was the smallest I've ever seen he was barely 3'' if that.
The lima however came in at a perfect 5''. The BGK were labeled as 3-5'' yea right.
Anyways, he was doing fine the first 2 weeks eating and all. Now, since the 12th he is no where to be seen. I think he may have gotten eat by my lima shovelnose or killed by the chocolate cichlid. He is missing. I don't have a ton of hiding spaces and he used the driftwood that makes a cave. I pulled all decor out of the aquarium during a water change and he was not in the tank.
Oh well guess I'll get a bigger one, DAMN!

Sorry to hear. Probably blame the LSN. Get those bgk at bigger sizes.

Yea, he was my prime suspect, but it's ok he's one of my favorite freshwater fish.. I'd say he is in the top 3 of the fish I own now. He lets me hand feed him and has gotten used to me, he will come to the top of the tank when I am throwing shrimp and tilapia pieces in and will take one from my hand. So cute, gonna have to have my brother Jimmy film it. Love South American catfish for their personality.

damn that sucks. I had a ropefish go missing for over 2 months and I pulled everything out and then one day poof he was there
Thanks, I hope he shows up but I doubt it. If he did manage to jump out either he got taken by my beagle Brandi or he landed in the tank below which is housing a very aggressive jaguar cichlid for a friend so he would be a goner there too.

Oh dear :(

Knifefish aren't exactly tough cookies most of the time, sorry for your loss :(

What's the growth rate like on them? Would recommend african knives but your LSN will outgrow and eat em

I am not sure on the growth size, but I know that any fish that is well fed and has clean water can grow a little bit faster than usual.
How big do African knife fish get? I kind of like them. If I can get one above 3'', I think it should be fine. Don't forget that this will be a much bigger, deeper, and longer aquarium and there will be plenty of hiding spaces. I would think that the knife would be hiding somewhere in the caves, and the lima is very active surprisngly. I keep him well fed now so you never know.

Biggest I've ever seen is 7" in person but wild males can get 12" at very max.

I keep nitrates 20>, infact haven't had a high reading, feed often, and the knives eat well. Maybe 1.5" growth in a year if I'm optimistic. Very slow growing fish

True, yea they are really slow growers, I've had 3 of them before, believe it or not they all got along. If I can't find a bigger BGK, I'll get a different knife.
Love the royal clowns, but they get HUGE! Wish there was a smaller species of clown knifes. I suppose I can grow one out and rehome it, but that isn't really suitable.
What other knifefish would you recommend?

They tend to get along well with a bit of bickering with enough space.

South American knives are very interesting but specialist to say the least. Should have setups based around them

There are other featherbacks apart from clowns

What are the other kinds of featherbacks?
I'd love to get one of them.
BTW, let me know when you post the video, looking forward to it. Hopefully, I did not spoil anything.
