I bought a ropefish about a week ago, I was really happy as I had been looking for one for awhile with no luck. He was about 10.5". This morning I found him dead. Dont know why....
I noticed last night that the last inch or so of his tail looked strange, like shed snakes skin. The scales were lighter in color and had a sheen to them. I made a note to keep an eye on it and when I found him this morning his head looked the same way. Any ideas on what might have done him in?
Sorry no camera right now so my description will have to do.

What was he in with?

Steve

2 Sens, 2 Spotted Raphs, and a Sun Cat (the prime suspect if violence was involved)
The Sun Cat is only 5" or so so he couldn't really have eaten the Rope but his mouth was big enough to get started if he was feeling adventurous.
Does the tail condition sound like a possible bite?

sounds like it to me buddy but i could be wrong.

could of been fin rot or some other similar bacterial infection. Unfortunately rope fish are quite susceptible to bacterial problems for some reason. mine just got eaten. when i got home it was gone and my endli's stomach is massive right now. lol

sorry for ur loss.:(

And yours ^^

sorry for your loss,
alot of people here in my area saying ropefish are very fragile to keep, I dunno if its true. But I love my big head endli more.

IME rope fish can be kind of touch and go in the first week or so. I've experienced what you're talking about with newly introduced ropes in a pretty clean tank, and I have a rope that I've had for about a year and a half living happily in a nasty sump (I can't get him out :) ) I remember reading somewhere that they really prefer high temps when introduced to tank... don't know if that's true.
