THE GARDEN STATE
I,ve been gone for awhile but now i,m back. As some of you know i made the mistake of moving to Florida in June but Now its time to go home back to Jersey. I brought my fish down using a large rubbermaid container ac power inverter, a small fluval and an airaider. All my fish made it down with no problem. it was the summer time so i didn't run a heater. But now since its winter Does anyone think i should use the heater or would the fish be alright for 20 hours in cooler water?
the fish consist of oscars, dempseys, FH's , clownknife, some bichers, arowana, B.juruense. and a few others :headbang2

Since you have an inverter and you plan on putting them into the rubbermaid tube or whatever you are going to use, then run a small 50w heater in there just to be safe. I would imagine that being only 50w your cars should run that fine, just to make sure that your water doesnt get too chilly.

well as long as you make the drive straight through, and with the temp. constant, i dont see a problem with it... although that better be one big cooler... or a few coolers

thanks for the input. straight drive. 37g container gonna be tight but i don't have many options. other then getting rid of some of my fish but i don't want to do that. i'll add a small heater.

Good luck to you! Hope the trip goes over without a catch.

What part of Fl are you in? And what size is your inverter? If a small heater is too much with the aerator and filter, just use the heater. You can get a battery operated aerator at Walmart for five dollars. Since you will be making a straigh run, you do not really need a filter. Just keep it wet to keep the bacteria alive. (You can also alternate between the heater and the filter.)

By withholding food for two days prior to the trip, it will cause the fish to minimize their production of waste. Do daily water changes to get them use to new water, and then the day of the move give them 100% new water. When you arrive, the waste in the water will be at a minimum. Start filtering the water as soon as you arrive. Don't start water changes until at least a day after the move (unless the ammonia has skyrocketed) (this will minimize stress on the fish). Since you will be using entirely different source water, do small daily water changes until the fish are converted to the new water.

At least have a heater handy.

So, what was wrong with Fla? I've been to Jersey, made me appreciate Fla. (Tho I was in Newark, does that count?)
