My grandfather has always loved going to auctions, yard sales, etc. He usually buys guns and music equipment. My cousins and I had always loved playing with the random instruments he bought.
Fast forward quite a few years...
My son Carson loves playing the same stuff we did. To stop him from throwing a fit two days ago, grandpa let Carson take his favorite ukelele home. After all these years, I was messing around on it today. Tuned it up like a guitar and started playing and singing songs for my son. When I was done playing and telling the wife goodbye as she was leaving for work, I looked at the headstock for the very first time. How did a musician not notice a name like Gretsch on the headstock? I can't believe I didn't see it before lol. Needless to say, I'm going to fix what I have to and put it away for safe keeping. I'd always heard cool stories like this, but now I finally have one of my own. They're not worth all that much, especially compared to a lot of my gear, but I'll treasure this one forever.
