For the last few weeks the pair have been re-arranging the 6ft to their desire, everything and anything is getting chased. They are displaying exact breeding behaviours, dances, cleaning slate, defending the area etc. The midas is nearing 9" i "believe" she is a female and Biffy is pushing 10". We "think" hes a male but we are uncertain, can any one give us pointers on how to sex each fish? and IF they can breed atall? We want to let them go through with it but the tanks home to so many other fish and we have nowhere to put them :|!!!!:nilly:

I'm not sure if they can breed or not. It might be good to ask some of the members in the FH/hybrid section. Do you have any pictures of the two that you can post? You can't always depend on pics to sex fish but if they are close to breeding, their vents could be visible.

Ill try and get some pics can i upload them through facebook or do i need a photobucket account or?....

If this is possible, it would be a very interesting mix/result.
Vieja: size/bulk, agression, colors + Midas: size/bulk, agression, kok/nuchal hump. Wow!!!
I've heard on a few FH boards that a few breeders(back in the day/Old school breeders) have used vieja for coloring & bulk, & Midas for kok, agression & bulk.

IMO:
I'm going to say the vieja may be the female.
Either she/he is getting most of the food, or she hold a bunch of eggs.
My female always seems chubby/bloated when she's holding.(Not always the case tho)
The female genitalia will appear more round & the male will appear more pointy during spawn time.
You'll mos def notice the egg tube drop on the female when the time comes.

Nice fish!!!

Thanks :P well the bif has always been on the heavy side, he was originally the smallest in the tank but has now taken over the oscar and arowana which were double his size, hes also the one of the fastest growing cichlids ime its unreal that hes only about year and pushing a massive 10" he jst eats non stop -.-

Can they breed? sure, viejas have been crossed with amphilophus many times. Also I'd say the bifasc is male and the midas is female.

Then the bif is probably a male, I luv the gut on him!!!
It's amazing how fast these guys grow.

My RD/Midevil is about 10" TL & is about 1.5 yrs old.
I got him on Nov. 29th 09 @ 1.25"-1.5".
He's a pig too, he doesn't have the same appetite since them move, but I'm guess it will come back. :D
Can wait so I can get some chubby pix in his new tank.

Good luck with the spawn.
Keep us updated.

Yeah, ill probably post an update in a few weeks *fingers crossed* hopefully this all goes to plan :D
