Hello,
At my house we have a well for our water so the water is extremely hard. I have always thought this is bad for the tank because it would jam up the filter. We run it thru a water softener at the tap but I still worry about using it in the tank. I always buy water from the store to use but it just gets so expensive, so I was wondering of anyone else has had a similar problem or if there are any products I can buy to treat the well water to be age enough for the fish.

Well water should be fine for your fish depending on the species and the water parameters. What fish do you keep?

Using a softener just replaces hardness with salt. Resulting in same amount of dissolved solids. Being on well water it is cheaper and more feasible to buy and install a ro/di (reverse osmosis/distiller) which will create the perfect water for you.

It all depends on what kind of fish you keep. If you keep African rift lake fish, your water should be perfect straight.
If you want to keep discus, it might be a problem.
Water softener water is generally bad for fish, because calcium is simply replaced with sodium, the salt.
Super market water, if DI, is also bad for fish, unless mixed with well water.
Well water is only bad if contaminated, then it would be bad for you too.

I have never treated my well water and never lost a fish except for disease or tankmate aggression. in fact, since moving to this house with well water, all of my fish are growing faster and are in exceptional condition. and the disease is my fault for being lazy with quarentine

I have hard well water and fish that prefer softer conditions. No problem.
My Geos spawned only 1 week behind their siblings belonging to someone else, and his water is way more ideal than mine.
Water changes are more important than ph for all fish.
Messing with your water can be counter-productive. it turns a simple task into a complex one.
