I'd like your experiences with the Wels, with emphasis on your choice of diet, tankmates, temperature, and behavior long-term related to lighting/daytime.

Photos would be fantastic! How many are in the US, normal and albino? Who has the biggest one?

They are quite rare here. According to Wes Wong of Rare Fish, who is the only source of wels I've ever found in the US, there has been may be a couple of dozen or so sold in the US in the last decade. You might have to hold your breath for too long, albeit Wes has just sold a dozen of albinos and normally colored ones about a month or two ago.

I'm surprised that no MFK's have chimed in. They are one of the ultimate monster fish. I wonder why.

I think its because its a coldwater species. Most people here keep more tropical tanks. And the ones that do keep coldwater usually don't have tanks massive enough to hold one.

ya recently ive seen them pop up quite a bit so give it a few years and im sure there will be beasts. i was lucky to see a baby albino on my visit to rich's fishland. id definately be interested in growth rates and such, just out of curiosity.

Quite active ? He is the most lazy fish I've ever owned - I'll keep track of his growth! I posted a picture in the catfish section, but did not label it - to see if people knew what it was :)
