Went fishing with a Manatee

While I was out fishing in the river this week, I spooked a manatee that was munching on some water lillies. I was wearing polarized glasses so I could see him really well. Unfortunately, my camera had a hard time penatrating the water's surface. This first picture is actually one of the last that I took of him, but I'm bumping it to the beginning so everyone knows what they are looking at in the others.

The little lilly patch is where I spooked him. He was only about 3-4 feet away from my canoe. The only time I was closer to a manatee, I needed a new prop.

I'm not normally a marine mammal person, but after working with those things, I have a soft spot for them. Very cool animals indeed. Great pics.

I love manatees, except when they drag your hoses out to sea. They are sooo dumb. In mammals, a brain with more wrinkles normally indicates higher thinking complexity and capacity.

these things r the reason i started becoming obsessed with aquatic life. They r the reason i study marine biology... truly amazing creatures...
