How far above the water line is the lighting and what type of lighting is it?

I ask coz I've noticed if there is not enough light they die, and if the lights are too close to the plants they may also get burnt and die...

Im wondering if it could be something to do with lack of light + nutrients

They don't do real well if there's lots of flow and don't require tons of light. Best growth I've seen on my water lettuce is in a 10g with a sponge filter (no flow) and just a regular CFL over top of the tank. I had to scoop out excess watter lettuce once a week.
