i just added a Lima shovelnose cat to my aquarium last week and it has stayed at the very top of my tank day and night... it hasn't ate anything either... is it normal for it to be at the top of the tank?

The shovelnoses at my lfs all stayed at the top.. The one I have is NEVER at the top.. based on normal catfish behavior, I'd assume he'd be on the bottom

mine used to hang out in various levels in the tank when i first got it but once it settled in he stuck to his driftwood near the bottom...it also took 4-5 days before he started eating.

I see lots of limas in the lfs that are usually vertical? Like face down? Can anyone explain that?

i once read somewhere on the net when doing research on a tiger shovelnose, that if they are not happy with their envoironment they will be very inactive and mostly stay up top. im not sure if this is true or not. But as Tstone stated, my lfs has a shovelnose for sale (hence my research - decided not to purchase), hes pushing a foot long and housed in something like a 60-75 gal. and does the same thing EVERY TIME im in the store - stays at the top and very inactive. Like i said, I dont know if this is a true fact or not though. Someone with expirence on sn may be able to give you a better answer.

Limas are the only shovelnose ive seen that dont always like hovering at the bottom like most catfish. noraml for the to be angeled face dwon on top side of the tank of behind a filter . what they shouldnt be doing is swimming around the top with their mouths at the water surface. no gasping and should be just sitting on the bottom either sidewyas or anything.

Ive had a few limas.

The reason why they lay vertical is to eat, they wait patiently for food to come near and theyll strike. Their anntenas help them hone in on their pray, they do this by resting on the bottom or resting their back end on a plant or rock and their head being close to the
ground.

Id imgine somethings very wrong w/ yours, their pretty sketchy fish and freak out easy. Try earthworms that are non scented!

Tank mates? Pic?
