My sump decided that it was time to deliver about 10 gallons all over my 2nd floor bedroom. It spread following the slope of the room and soaked about a 6ftx6ft area. I knew I had a wet/vac downstairs but it failed miserably after plugging it in. So what I was left was a load of towels and 2 fans. After about an a hour of blotching and desperation, I left the fans to do as much as it could.

I have no prior experience with water damage, but should I be more concerned about mold/bacteria developing? Is 10 gallons of water enough of a reason to rip out the carpet?

Anyways, thanks for any feedback.

Pull the carpet and pad up around the edges and allow the floor itself to dry. Aim a fan under the carpet or on the wood. The more air circulation you can get UNDER the carpet and pad the better.

thanks,
My only problem is the carpet is walltowall and I have no way of prying up the carpet without cutting it. =(

It should be fastened down at the edges with a tack strip. Gently pull the edges up, at least enough to get some air circulation. It goes back down easy as long as you don't need to stretch it.

dont worry man imagine a canister filter leaking about 50 gallons out on the 2nd floor while your sleeping onto your moms (grandmas) antique dining room table and then into the basement (somehow missing your dad prized pool table) right under the dining room :(

had to empty 5 tanks take every thing out of my room, strip the carpet
somehow my parents still allow me to have tanks in my room lol
nothing over 45 gallons though :( everything big is in the basement (now have to lug buckets up the stairs since there is now drain or toilet in teh basement

If you got a dehumidifyer you can sit right on top of the wet spot that would be best.run it on max till the carpet is so dry it almost feels crispy.

thanks again guys. what's really sad is about an hour before the incident there was a leak from the bathroom into the guest bedroom-the ceiling below it had a nice crack forming, with water stains. so- yeah 2x wet thursday. I'm fortunate-hope i didnt speak too soon- that no water started leaking downstairs.

btw, i really would like to have some circulation below the carpet, but the way the room is laid out, along with the tank and other furniture, there's no wall near the wet spot that can be pulled up.

personally i would rather try and pull it up then have mold occur. ten gallons of water can do alot of damage too......

what cause your sump to overflow or leak?

Pull out the carpet and pad and place fans under em, go buy a few and return them after the job is done
