Just got my tank up and running and I am seriosuly considering over-filtering it. I am currently running a penguin 350. I am considering buying an AC 110, or a Fluval 305, or converting my 20G into a wet/dry system. Its only a 60G tank currently housing 2 x 4inch clown knives and maybe 13 one inch feeders.

Back to the question. I was wondering if I can use a cannister filter or even a wet dry system even if my tank will not have a drain. It is made up of glass and quite frankly, I don't want to risk drillling drain holes in the tank.

Can I run a cannister filter or a wet/dry filter with a drain hose coming from the top of the tank. Return line will be, of course, be using a pump. Can I do it that way? Top of tank is 42inches. A cannister will probably be 10 - 12 inches tall. If I can, how do I do it?

Canisters are designed to go over the top of the glass without drilling. That is the standard way they are setup. Wet dry/sumps can be run over the top edge, but they need an overflow, either the PVC type, or one of the manufactured HOB overflows.

Thanks! Just the answer I was looking for! Pardon the ignorance but how does an overflow work? The name of the equipment is self explanatory but I just wanted to know how it works and how it works with a wet/dry system?
