wet/dry filter help

Hello
I am new to fish keeping and have a few questions.
I would like to build a (wet/dry filter) / (sump tank) are they the something?) For my 55g tank but don’t fully understand how to build it and also how they work. Is there a web site that gives detailed information and images on how they work and how to construct one economically?
How do I get the water from the tank to the filter unit without cutting the glass?

overflow box can solve the problem if you don't want to cut into the tank. it's like a HOB filter but this one siphons the water to the wet/dry filter. you can search on the net for different flows and different brands.
