I tried my hand at building a DIY sump out of a sterlite tower and have a pot Scrubbie question. The order of my filter media is as follows: first drawer blue bonded filter media over a sheet of 50 micron polishing pad, second drawer filter floss over blue bonded filter media, drawer three pot Scrubbies, drawer 4 pot Scrubbies, drawer 5 pot Scrubbies. The last drawer I removed and put my heater, some chemi-pure and old filter media from an established aquaclear 70. The issue I have is the last drawer of pot Scrubbies is submerged in water. I'm running a Rio 1700 and the height of the water is may be a half inch to an inch above the pump. I don't have enough room to raise the sterlite tower underneath the tank. The last drawer of pot Scrubbies probably shouldn't be submerged. Should I remove one of the layers of mechanical filters and swap it out for the pot Scrubbies drawers, or leave the set up as is? Thanks

It doesn't matter what bio media is, it can be lava rock, scrubbies, rings, just about anything.
Bio media is only a surface for beneficial bacteria to live on.
Some media has more spaces to colonize but in the end the bacteria colonize everything from media, to substrate, to the inner glass side of the tank, and populations are related to your stock and amount of ammonia they produce..
I have used lava rock, with scrubbiest (or other mechanical material) for over 50 years, and as a microbiologist tested and counted coloies under a microscope, and have never noticed any significant difference one to the other, I consider all the hype comparing one being better or worse as simple B.S..
I also doesn't matter whether some is submerge or dripped on, as long as it has oxygenated water, around or flowing over it.

Found this gem during a search about bonded pads for my wet dry THANKS!
